THE WALLThe wall in the real world consists of an 11 ft high and 15 ft long painted construction set up in a gallery space. It houses 2 microphones evenly spaced along its length at head height and an equal number of loudspeakers positioned along the wall. Speaking into the wall produces a decaying series of mourning and screaming sounds. The sounds of the voices are initially strident, softening as they fade away. Sounds present at the wall both from people mourning and the wall itself are then streamed across the internet where it can be heard both on this website and in Second Life, where it is emitted from a corresponding virtual wall of similar size and appearance. Multiple people can speak into the wall to create a cacophony of lamentation. The level of lamentation depends therefore on gallery opening hours. |
